Helping Hands for Nepal in Norway (HHN)
I. Brief about us:
Helping Hands for Nepal in Norway (HHN) is a non-profit, non-political andvolunteer organization established in 2013 with the crusade of a handful of socially committed Nepalese residing in Norway. In its initial phase, it merely aimed at supporting the school going children of economically poor families from rural parts of Nepal. This aim of HHN is of prime focus even at present. Later, the sudden outbreak of communicable diseases in Jajarkot, a remote district in the mid hills, and the devastating earthquake of 25 April made HHN realize that an emergency fund is necessary which can be used for the needy peopleduring crisis. Therefore, HHN decided to make its area wider with the secondary aim of distributing relief materials during different phases of crisis. Furthermore, HHN is also concerned with promoting and preserving Nepalese culture in foreign land by organizing various cultural programs making coordination with NESCO Norway and other Norway-based organizations that work for the welfare of Nepal.
We believe that HHN is the best channel to distribute the collected fund to the needy people in Nepal…
II. OBJECTIVES
• To support the (underprivileged) school going children of economically poor families who study in public schools of remote locations in Nepal,
• To establish an emergency fund that can be used to support the victims of crisis who are beyond the reach of national or international aid,
• To promote and preserve Nepalese culture by organizing various cultural programs
• To promote and preserve Nepalese culture abroad and create a mutual bond among the Nepalese residing in Norway
• Building partnership with various organizations to promoting accessible schooling for the poor children of rural areas
III. WHAT WE DO?
Supporting underprivileged children in their basic education
We believe that no child should be deprived of their right to education. But the reality in Nepal is that there is no accessible schooling for all the children, especially those who belong to economically poor families in rural areas. Even if they are enrolled in their primary grades, they do not complete the full cycle of basic education. Among others, the main reason of this situation of dropout is poverty and low household income of their families… We aim to support these children in order that they will enjoy their right to basic education and become a complete human being in future.
Creating an emergency fund to support the victims during crisis
World is not certain, and nobody can predict what is going to happen in future. A huge portion of land mass in Nepal is vulnerable to different kinds of disasters. Every year, Nepal experiences the loss of hundreds of lives due to natural disasters like earthquake, floods, epidemics, etc. These disasters don’t appear with signals, but the fact is that they are devastating and can destroy humans and properties in no time. Once disasters occur, the disaster-hit areas are in emergency need and nothing else is more important than settling the crisis. Therefore, HHN aims at creating an emergency fund which can be used to support the victims of disasters.
Promoting and preserving Nepalese culture
One of the most unique characteristics of Nepalese societies is that they have diverse culture and traditions. Nepalese residing in Norway also bring with them their own culture. HHN aims to create a platform where all the Nepalese can come and celebrate their festivals together, which we believe enhances mutual bond and feeling of brotherhood among those who are away from their home.
IV. FUND RAISING MECHANISM
As we are a volunteer and non-profit making organization established for the welfare of our nation state, our foremost principle is fund raising. Our members are voluntarily committed to make a minimum contribution for the country with their maximum efforts. Since the establishment of this organization, we are collecting our fund from membership fee, charity shows and also through organizing various social and cultural events. We are planning to expand our fund raising mechanism by collaborating with different national and international organizations.
V. HOW WE WORK?
Education:
HHN makes an intensive study of an appropriate location in order to identify the underprivilegedchildren who are already enrolled in a public school but facing a problem in continuing their studies due to the inability of their parents to afford for their schooling. For identifying the needy ones, we communicate directly with the school authorities who are later involved with our aim of supporting those children through different means. We primarily support them with their text books, stationeries and uniforms.
Emergency Fund:
Nepal is a disaster-prone country. It has an enormous portion of remote location. In one hand these places are disaster-prone, on the other they are beyond the reach of national and international aid. They have to wait for the lengthy bureaucratic process even for receiving relief materials. Because of lack of immediate relief efforts in emergency, many people die of various disasters like earthquake, floods, landslides, etc. We try to involve our local representatives to directly support the victims with our emergency fund.
Culture and Tradition:
We aim to preserve and promote Nepalese culture even while we are abroad. We try to create a platform where all the Nepalese can celebrate their festival together. We believe it gives an opportunity to all of us to enhance a mutual bond and also to introduce Nepalese culture in foreign land.
VI. ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
Since our establishment, we have conducted several programs
VII. APPEAL
HHN would like to take this opportunity to recall a famous quote ‘helping hands are holier than praying lips’, and appeal both the national and international communities to cooperate with us in fulfilling our mission of supporting the children of remote areas of Nepal who are deprived of their right to education; and also in creating an emergency fund that can be used during emergencies in Nepal.
Vision:
Striving for the development of quality life of underprivileged children of remote areas of Nepal…
It primarily aims at supporting the school going children of economically poor families from rural parts of Nepal in order to provide them an opportunity to grow into the world of education and become a complete human being.
